Story Snippet: The Glowing Gems

Story snippet inspired by image prompt:
Forest path with distance light in a dim, gray-blue haze. In the foreground, stones glow in dirt that is otherwise black. A rain puddle sits in the path.

The gems glow on the ground. Pick them up, and they stop. Set them on another surface, and the glow would be absent. Take a jar of the dirt from the ground and set the gem on top of the packed dirt, and the glow won't be there, either. No, the gems have to be in the forest, on the soil.

Knights and scientists and merchants have tried everything they can think of to reproduce the glow, but nothing works. None of them have considered the gems aren't magical at all. The gems simply show what the ground otherwise conceals. Magic saturates the ground down several hundred feet, and the gems only show that it is present.

The puddle never dries up. When it rains, it never grows in size. The gems glow around it. Drink from it, and they say you'll live forever. Trip and fall into it, and you'll lose more than your balance. Sit in it, and you'll disappear, never to be seen again. Dive into it, and it'll suddenly be deeper than it had appeared to be. When you reemerge, the forest will be transformed. The darkness will be banished for light. Vibrant color will surround you, and you'll see the full, technicolor magic of the forest that the gems only hinted at. But know you'll never be able to leave again. You have baptized yourself in the forest and are now reborn as the forest's creature. But with magic around you, why would you leave?
