Story Snippet: We Watched the Landscape Being Drawn

Story snippet inspired by an image prompt:

Two skiers stand on skies on the peak of a short hill. One points off to the distance while one holds up a phone to take a picture. Distance mountains are little more than squiggly lines and pastel colors. In the middle ground on the right are houses and a ski lift going up another hill.

It was here at the bottom of the slope, where it curved up just a bit, that we came to a stop on the ridge and watched the landscape being drawn.

"The Artist has been adding details to Mount Juniper for 200 years," the tour guide said, pointing at the most defined peak on the horizon, surrounded by vaguer shapes of incomplete mountaintops. "Predictions say it will be completed in another 10 years."

"I'd be interested in land holdings," I said.

"Already filled. You'd have better luck reserving a spot on the mountain that predictions say the Artist will finish next."
