When it was all done, Kelly’s shirt and jeans were covered in water droplets and her heart was pounding from the burst of adrenaline that hadn’t worn off yet. She sat down with a plop on the toilet seat. She stared at the sink filled with water, churned by the kicking legs of tiny, fluffy, yellow and brown birds. The ducklings seemed happy enough to get a bath. The brown and yellow one at the center shook water off its back and went back to wading.
Outside, the siren wailed a warning about the tornado. She’d hurried to round up all the ducklings from their pen outside. And as she counted them for the tenth time, she finally let herself relax. She’d gotten them all. It would be okay.
