January 19th through 25th, 2014
This week had its highs and lows. Art can sometimes be painful, literally. That was why I didn't post a photo journal like I'd planned, because I did too much physical work with my hands and they hurt too much to finish the beaded piece I was going to photograph for the journal.
One form of art that has never given me tendinitis problems (so far, *fingers crossed*) is photography. I'm saving up for a really nice camera, but in the meantime, I use a digital camera that takes very high quality photos in the right lighting conditions. The photos are in good enough condition to make prints out of them and sell them on DeviantArt, so I can't complain. I also enjoy visiting places and taking photos--mostly of buildings--from as many angles as I can find. Last Thursday, I drove to Abbeville, Louisiana, a town I'd only visited about once in my life even though it's only a 20 minute drive from the outskirts of Lafayette, where I live. Abbeville, I discovered, is an aged town, and it has many wonderful old buildings in its downtown area. Some of them just need paint jobs, while other buildings are crumbling shells. I happen to love aged ruins, so that was just fine. I also took photos of the catholic church against a gray-sky backdrop. I want to go back later in the year on a nice, spring day to take some comparison photos.
Earlier in the week, I posted a few more photographs on DeviantArt and also made them available as prints. I don't know why trees fascinate me so much, though I do think they can take some interesting shapes and can have intriguing textures. "Reaching - 15", "Reaching - 16" and "Reaching - 17" are just a few examples of I find interesting.
I found the subject of Baby Magnolias and Baby Magnolias -2 in my own yard.
The rest of the photos I've posted so far are from places in Switzerland or from Paris. "Halfway Falls" shows part of the miles-long cliff that border the Valley of 72 Waterfalls. "Red Roofs - 4" just shows a section of Bern, Switzerland that is pretty ordinary for that city but was completely unordinary for me. "Little Red Spire above the Grossmunster", I hope, shows the contrasting styles found in the Grossmunster Cathedral in Zurich, a cool building with parts obviously built at different times.
I love "Reflection", but I hesitated about posting this one on DeviantArt for a long time. It's not particularly original, seeing as many pictures of the Louvre includes its reflection on the side of I. M. Pei's grand pyramid. I got my inspiration for this piece from those photos that I found on Google. Still, I liked those other photographer's shots, and I also like my own.
Lastly, at the end of the week, I published a multi-review post of five behind-the-scenes views of digital paintings. The artists posted step-by-step views of the processes they took to create three portraits and two scenes, and I wrote about my impressions of those processes.
