What's Tipping the Scales about?
No other dragon has lived as well as Cayna. Her ancestors were feared and hunted. Cayna entertains onlookers with displays of dragon fire, appears on talk shows, and patrols the skies along the border. As the Dragon Protector, she can be herself, and the American people love her for it. But something is missing.

Why did you write Tipping the Scales?
I enjoy stories that explore incorporating the fantastic into modern life. I had an idea for a dragon in the United States, and this is what happened.
What is the fiction genre for Tipping the Scales? Who's your target audience?
Fantasy fiction for the adult/trade market.
What are the themes of your book? Why have scenes in Florida, New York, Maine, etc?
My book’s themes are about life in the spotlight; having to conform to modern society but not really belonging in it; and the difference between having freedoms and true freedom. I think many readers can relate to these themes. Dragons have taken on lots of forms in fiction, myths and legends; my depiction draws largely on my own exposure to them in fiction as grand, deadly, sentient creatures. Many settings in my book draw on my own experiences in Florida, New Jersey and New York. Other settings are influenced by my family ancestry.
How would you compare your book to others?
I have imagined how society would be different if the supernatural lived openly among humans, and other authors like Gail Carriger, Holly Black and J. Kathleen Cheney have also done this. Dragonhaven by Robin McKinley normalizes the presence of dragons in modern society, though in a different way than what I've protrayed.
Would you compare yourself to other authors?
My writing style has a lot in common with authors like Beth Revis, Marissa Lingen, Veronica Roth and Holly Black.
How does Tipping the Scales compare to other books in the same genre (specifically, the price, its physical aspects and your writing style)?
My writing style tends to be rooted in realism with bits of humor and sarcasm thrown in. It’s a style that Beth Revis and Holly Black both use, which is why I compare my writing to theirs. I also think my style is very typical of young adult fantasy. The audience for my book is a little older, but adults who have also read YA would enjoy my book.
As far as price is concerned, I compared the price of other fantasy novellas published over the past 4 years (i.e., post-covid). My list prices for the print versions are about average based on what I found.
Physically, I compared the quality and formatting of novellas published by TOR DOT COM and other publishing houses. I did further research and based my design on industry standards.
Which publishing platforms do you use?
IngramSpark distributes the print versions of my book. Draft2Digital and KDP distribute the ebook version. My book is available online through Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Kobo, Powell’s, and many more retailers. The full retailer list is on my website.
