More Lessons in Self-Publishing

My book is out, but I'm still learning. Here are a few more lessons in self-publishing (or read part one).

Printing Notes:

  • If ordering a proof copy from a print-on-demand service, do not use an ISBN you paid for. That ISBN will be attached to that copy. If you choose not to use that POD to distribute your book, you will have to jump through hoops to get that ISBN unlinked from that copy.

Online Advertising Notes:

  • I have tried buying an advertising spot in two mailing lists with thousands of subscribers. Neither attempt has garnered me much attention from potential readers.
  • When I started advertising my book on Facebook, I was contacted over Facebook Messenger by other authors marketing their own books. It's an angle of networking I hadn't considered.
  • Pinterest can apparently be used to promote my book. Not many advice articles mention this. I have no idea if it would be affective, but apparently, it's an option.
  • Draft2Digital offers a Universal Link through Books2Read, where a single page lists the retailers where customers can order your book. Analytics track page visits and which retailers visitors prefer. Unfortunately, Books2Read is oddly picky about which retailers you can add, particularly for the print versions.

Distribution Notes:

  • I am learning that independent bookstores follow one or more of these rules:
    • Only take books on consignment from local authors (which is fair enough).
    • Only take books that are available through Ingram.
    • Only take books with the title and author clearly displayed on the spine.
  • Both Draft2Digital and IngramSpark will only tell you about some of the retailers they distribute your book to. I've found a few extra by doing a Google search, which has been delightful. But the searching still takes up some of my time.
