Week Nine in Review: 900 Yards Later, Business Cards and DeviantArt Updates

February 23rd through March 1st, 2014

The passage of time hit me in the face during week nine. It happened as I unraveled a length of black bead thread from the spool and I realized that I could see the plastic spool’s white shaft. This is a 900-yard spool of bead thread--or, rather, it *was* 900 yards. Now, my guess is that it's down to 30 yards, maybe 20, maybe less. Four years of beading led to this. I used other colors in that time, sure, and lots of them, but I've also used more black than any other color in that span of time. I'm amazed both by how much time it took and by how little time it took, too.

During the week, while I continued to make more jewelry for the upcoming Spring Arts and Crafts Festival, I also reviewed my business card designs and made a few new ones in Photoshop. I don't like to use just one design; I like to print a bunch of designs at one time. All the business card printing services I've found will only print one business card design in large batches, so I don't use a printing service. I have my own process. In Photoshop, I copy and paste a group of finished card images into three or four 8x10 inch files, save them as .jpgs and upload them onto a thumb drive. I then drive over to FedEx/Kinko's and use their color copier/printers to print out each file onto white cardstock paper. Then I return home and cut the cardstock paper into individual cards myself. This method saves money on printing and labor costs, and I get to see how well different designs work before I spend more money making additional copies. The downside to this method is that it is not time-saving, since it requires a bit of work on my part, but it's work I enjoy.

On DeviantArt, I posted new photos of a necklace I've renamed Copper River. I didn't post many photo prints this time, just a couple. Valley Fields offers another favorite view of the Valley of 71 Waterfalls, outside of Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. It was a gorgeous day and a gorgeous view. Road to the Sky, meanwhile, is perhaps not my best work, but I like the mirage-like quality to the clouds, so that's why I posted it. It was a strange bit of interstate--a mile or two to the south, just beyond the stretch of trees, was the bay outside of Pensacola. A few miles south of that lay the Gulf of Mexico. You wouldn't know they were there from the interstate, insulated as the road was by the tree cover.

I didn't do much on the blog this week. I've completely broken my resolution to do a photo journal and art review every week. At some point, I may have a catch-up week or month. Stay tuned.
